Third Grade Visits Local Synagogue
At Saint David's, boys learn the history, rituals, and core beliefs of many religious traditions including Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism—and visit houses of worship to deepen their understanding. They are not taught what to believe, but are encouraged to listen, reflect, and make space for others’ views.
Last week, our third graders visited the Park Avenue Synagogue where a rabbi provided the history of the synagogue and information about Judaism's central teachings, worship practices, holy days, and rites of passage. The boys learned about Shabbat, discussed the three monotheistic Abrahamic religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, viewed a torah scroll, and were introduced to the eternal light that shines in all synagogues. These visits, in conjunction with in-class discussions, help students connect with a faith community in our neighborhood that may be different from their own. The experiences also allow the boys to compare and contrast their faith and traditions while cultivating good habits of mind for thinking about different religions and religious practice.
