Inclusion, Diversity, Community

An inclusive, caring environment
that welcomes, values, and respects difference.

In addition to our rigorous academic program and in keeping with our founding faith's spiritual traditions, Saint David’s is known for its sense of family, compassion, and kindness. Our community includes boys and faculty that reflect the cultural, ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, and religious diversity of New York City. At Saint David’s, we believe that being curious without prejudice and without bias is essential to a well-informed, educated young man. Our boys develop cultural competency as they are taught to respect and embrace difference in all its myriad manifestations. Boys broaden their perspectives as they learn from diverse traditions, creeds, and ways of life – fundamental in fulfilling the aspiration of the Founders “that they be good men.”

COMMUNITY

Community is everything to us; and we build it in a variety of ways. The Committee on Community and Inclusion (COCI), promotes a strong sense of belonging and deepens the bonds among boys, families, and faculty of all backgrounds.

As Saint David's is known for its strong community ethos, it is of paramount importance that we aspire for each boy, teacher, parent, and alumnus to feel a strong sense of belonging. The Committee on Community and Inclusion (COCI) works to deepen the bonds that underpin a culture of kindness, generosity of spirit, and empathy that extends to all.

COCI is run by parents who welcome everyone to support their community building efforts, which typically take the form of informal, low cost activities. A few examples include: parent backyard gatherings during the first week of school; parent book club discussions; breakfast with the Headmaster for new Upper School boys; a bowling event for new boys and their buddies; father/son basketball shoots; Yankees game outings; and family movie nights.

With a longstanding tradition of service to others, our boys develop empathy and compassion, contributing to the greater common good.
Our wide variety of long-term, shared service activities span all grades and require continued commitment to build meaningful relationships over time with others. Examples include: Seventh/Second Grade Buddies program, our work building schools in Ethiopia, projects in Grade Four for The Seeing Eye Foundation and the Gbowee Backpack initiative in Grade 6, and Cardinal Cooke and Carnegie East nursing home visits in Grades Six and Seven.

PROGRAM

In Chapel, religion, Sophrosyne, homeroom and advisory, boys engage in moral introspection. They dig beyond surface appearances to reflect on core values, including respect, honesty, and kindness.
We teach boys to respect and learn from all religious and cultural traditions, to recognize their own capacity for spiritual experience, and to develop strong moral values.

Daily Chapel provides boys with frequent messaging regarding the importance of kindness, empathy, and respect for difference. Student workshops facilitated at the beginning of each school year serve to underscore the importance of supporting new boys as they transition into Saint David's community. During these sessions, boys are also reminded that everyone deserves a fresh start as we launch the new school year. New boys entering Grades One through Seven are supported by a New Student Liaison, whose role is to help ensure the boys' well-being as they establish friendships, explore extracurricular activities, and adjust to the expectations of their teachers. In addition, boys' relationships are nurtured through the Community Club.

Diversity and Inclusion programming also includes:

INCLUSION, DIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY

Our Inclusion, Diversity and Community effort, builds understanding and empathy for all in our community through a variety of programming.
Examples include workshops with Jason Craige Harris, book club discussions, a faculty/staff newsletter, special faculty and staff events, and faculty professional development sessions that promote inclusion and belonging.

ALUMNI

Whether visiting the campus to view the facilities and meet with a favorite teacher or joining an alumni committee, our alumni are active participants in the life of the school.
Our alumni community is guided and supported by the Alumni Council, which celebrates and serves our community of graduates, faculty, and students, in support of the mission of Saint David’s School. With input from a wide range of Saint David’s stakeholders, the Alumni Council provides the school’s leadership with the perspective and support of grateful graduates, offers alumni a welcoming network of friends, and models to current students a diversity of ways in which they can be Good Men.
