First graders headed to Central Park last week with their science, pottery and art teachers for an inter-curricular project about leaves and why they change color. The boys loved collecting and examining leaves and searching for living creatures. In addition to collecting the leaves, they made nature scultptures out of the natural materials they gathered, and employed their learning about line and shape in art to make obsevations and inferences about shapes found in nature. They will use the leaves they collected to make leaf bowls in pottery. In science, they will experiment with chromatography. After cutting the leaves into small pieces and dissolving them in liquid, they will be able to see the various colors contained within the leaves.
