On Tuesday, May 17th, Saint David's School welcomed world renowned fashion designer Oscar de la Renta as the guest speaker for the Sixth Alumni Parents Council Lecture Series. Mr. de la Renta, in a conversation withWomen's Wear Daily Executive Editor Bridget Foley, spoke warmly to the audience of eighth graders, alumni parents, and faculty about the school's theme this year, The Aesthetic, and its relationship to his career in fashion. Guided by aspects of the school's mission statement, the conversation included de la Renta's reminiscences of leaving his native Dominican Republic at age 18 to study painting in Madrid, and his subsequent entrance into fashion at Balenciaga, where he learned about design. He also touched upon his work for The Spanish Institute, and the intellectual curiosity, "to always learn something new " that drives him each day when designing. De la Renta answered several questions posed by the eighth graders in attendance. He urged the boys to find and follow their passions. "I have a tremendous passion for fashion and for life. I hope you all think of your life with great passion, do the things that you love. Keep your eyes open. You will open your mind, if you do what you love."
Mr. de La Renta was welcomed as speaker by Headmaster David O'Halloran, who expressed gratitude for the treasured involvement of the school's alumni parent body, in particular for the Alumni Parents Council Chairs Dorothy Faux and Linda Foran who organized this signature event.
