Building Engineer

Saint David’s School is an independent PreK-8 school for boys, located in Manhattan. Founded in 1951 in the Catholic tradition, the school welcomes all people. A Building Engineer opening is available in the Facilities Department office for a full-time, 12-month position.

The Building Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of all building systems to ensure a safe, efficient, and well-functioning facility. This position involves hands-on technical work, preventive maintenance, and coordination with vendors and contractors to support building operations.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Operate, maintain, and repair building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, lighting, and mechanical equipment.

• Perform regular inspections to ensure all equipment is functioning properly and identify potential issues.

• Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergencies, and troubleshoot and resolve issues efficiently.

• Monitor building management systems (BMS) and make adjustments as needed for comfort, safety, and energy efficiency.

• Conduct preventive maintenance on all systems and maintain accurate service records.

• Coordinate and oversee work performed by outside contractors to ensure compliance with specifications, schedules, and safety standards.

• Support facility renovation and improvement projects as assigned.

• Maintain inventory of replacement parts.

• Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs of buildings, equipment, and systems. Diagnose the root cause of equipment and system failures and implement appropriate resolution.

• Responsible for the operation and maintenance of boilers, HVAC systems, air handlers, make-up air systems, condensing units, VAV and VRF systems, emergency generator, elevators, standpipe/sprinkler and fire alarm, ejectors, and kitchen equipment.

• Perform skilled and semi-skilled assignments in disciplines such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, flooring, and drywall.

• Utilize Delta BMS for equipment operations, monitoring, and response. Daily use of the department CMMS system for scheduling and tracking preventive and corrective maintenance work orders.

• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal building codes, health and safety regulations, and environmental standards for buildings and equipment.

• Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary. Accurately record work performed as required for department and regulatory archives. Read and understand building layouts, equipment specifications, and blueprints.

• Work independently to prioritize, schedule, and coordinate multiple activities while meeting all quality, safety, and regulatory standards. Oversee contracted vendors for scheduled service and special projects.

• Available for planned off-hour or weekend support necessary to sustain school readiness. On-call response to unplanned after-hour facility emergencies and snow days.

• Conduct regular and ongoing building inspection tours to identify and effectively resolve general maintenance and aesthetic issues. Participate in identifying and planning facility and equipment improvements for inclusion in the annual operating and capital budgets.

• Assist the Director of Building Services with planning capital improvement projects as needed.

• Monitor local, state, and federal building codes and compliance.

• Maintain current certifications for S-12, S-13, S-95, D-12, and Fire Life Safety.

• Hands-on support as needed.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Preferences:

• Associate's degree or technical certification required.

• 10+ years of experience in building maintenance, facilities operations or engineering roles.

Experience working at an Independent School is a plus.

• Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.

• Familiarity with building automation systems and computerized maintenance management systems.

• Strong communication and organizational skills.

• General computer literacy.

• Background clearance.

• Team player with well-rounded and highly developed technical skills, capable of seeing a need and willing to adjust accordingly in support of organizational needs.

• Maintain the relevant New York City-required Certificate of Fitness for facilities, infrastructure, and associated systems. Qualify for additional certifications as business needs evolve.

• Lift heavy objects. Easily bend, reach, stoop, balance, climb ladders, and be comfortable with heights.

• Salary range: $100,000 - $130,000 annually
