Spirituality

Religion at Saint David's is taught by precept and example. From their very first day at school, our boys are expected to treat each other with respect and kindness, and to extend this behavior to the entire Saint David's community and the world beyond. First and second graders participate in a weekly chapel service centered on a Bible story told by their teacher. In Grades Three through Eight, boys attend daily chapel, in which a hymn and a prayer are followed by an instructive story or experience related by a faculty member or, on special days, a Saint David's alumnus. The talks are a unique and cherished tradition at Saint David's. In addition, the school community gathers several times a year to celebrate Mass, underscoring our commitment to the moral and ethical development of boys.
Classes in religion are required for students in all grades. Lower School boys acquire a basic understanding of the Old and New Testaments. Upper School boys take a deeper look at the Bible and explore world religious traditions. Throughout the curriculum, teachers constantly challenge students to consider the ethical and moral issues of their lives. While the framework for religious studies is provided by the teachings of the Catholic Church, students of all faiths are encouraged to draw on their own religious traditions. In the appropriate grades, Catholic boys receive the sacraments of First Holy Communion, Reconciliation, and Confirmation, whle boys not receiving the sacraments play active roles in these inclusive ceremonies.
Saint David's has been served by two Chaplains: Msgr. Thomas Leonard (1968-1993) and its current Chaplain, Rev. Stephen Katsourous, S.J.
