Third graders role played immigrants entering America through Ellis Island at the turn of the 20th century in the Mock Ellis Island activity. The boys were interviewed by teachers and staff who acted as the various processors, questioning the "immigrants" about their health, jobs, education, and character. Those who were admitted took an oath of loyalty to America, others were deported or detained. This activity was the culmination of the boys' winter study of immigration in which they investigated the reasons why people decided to come to America and considered the many challenges they faced.
