Measuring for the Art Show - Grade 2

Second graders conducted their first math investigation of the year, in which they use a variety of strategies to measure the width and height of fabrics. This investigation helps the boys develop an understanding of the ideas behind number sense, such as; distance is measured as a series of iterated units; units used in measuring can vary in size, but the results will be equivalent; the associative and commutative properties; there are place value patterns that occur when adding groups of ten; and unitizing.
