Science Curriculum

Philosophy

Science education at Saint David’s School aims to engender a love of science and an enduring curiosity about the world. Students develop skills associated with scientific inquiry that enable them to design and carry out experiments. In doing so, they follow the steps of the scientific method in order to interpret the world in ways that are consistent with the application of scientific principles. While thinking like scientists, students learn to intellectually evaluate unanticipated outcomes, as well as learn from their mistakes. The science program incorporates age-appropriate, hands-on activities that link the earth, physical, and life sciences. In doing so, our boys learn to value the significant role science has had on the development of civilization. This knowledge guides each student in making personal decisions and solving real world problems.

Goals

    • To engender a love of science and an enduring curiosity about the natural world.
    • To document the process of scientific investigation and communicate findings using accurate scientific terminology in written and oral form.
    • To use the scientific method as a general road map for solving problems, emphasizing: hypothesizing, observation, data collection, analysis, and communication of results.
    • To use, both independently and cooperatively, scientific equipment as a means of collecting and analyzing data.
    • To develop and conduct hands-on, age-appropriate experiments that explore ways in which the earth, physical, and life sciences are connected.
