Mathematics Curriculum

Philosophy

Mathematics at Saint David’s reflects the school’s belief that two key elements to academic success are mastery of skills and self-confidence. To foster these elements in our boys, we build mathematical understanding on succeeding levels of knowledge grounded in rigorous academic pursuit, while teaching in ways that are both compelling and enjoyable. We use various methods of instruction to encourage the boys to think critically, express themselves logically, and apply their understanding to real world problems. Boys are also encouraged to cultivate an enduring curiosity about mathematics. We endeavor to help them develop an appreciation for its beauty in the practical, historical, and theoretical aspects of the subject as they encounter mathematics across the school’s curriculum, and in their daily lives.

Goals

    • To recognize the conceptual relationships between numeracy, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.
    • To think mathematically by using accurate language to question, justify, and explain.
    • To apply mathematical knowledge, methods, and tools strategically to solve real world problems.
    • To appreciate the history and continued evolution of mathematics as a science and method of inquiry essential to humanity’s development.
