Language Arts Curriculum
Philosophy
In the language arts program we believe a balanced literacy approach is the most effective way to develop strong readers and writers. Keeping the individual needs of students in mind, language arts teachers aim to create opportunities for boys to cultivate language skills by means of both explicit instruction and meaningful activities. Our students also benefit from opportunities to read literature for enjoyment and engage in guided reading experiences and literature studies that extend their knowledge and understanding. Reading a wide variety of materials from multiple perspectives provides rich opportunities to help students delight in well written texts, respect all cultures and religious traditions, and appreciate and develop good character. Critical analysis of literature and text through discussion and writing is an integral component of students’ development as reflective thinkers and readers. Students need the opportunity to write often and correctly for a wide range of purposes and audiences, as well as use writing as a tool for thinking. It is our aim that our students become independent readers and writers who think critically and creatively, and develop a love of learning through the written and spoken word.
Goals
- To develop an enduring love of reading across a variety of genres.
- To cultivate strategies to become successful, independent readers.
- To cogently express ideas in writing for a variety of audiences and purposes using the writing process.
- To develop critical and analytical skills to attain and apply knowledge and to broaden awareness of varying viewpoints.
- To speak confidently and effectively.
