About Us: The Environmental Awareness and Action Committee

The Environmental Awareness and Action Committee (EAAC) was formed in 2007 by faculty members Jenna Boccella, Brendan Kinnell and Jeremy O'Grady, under the full support of the school's administration. At Saint David's School, the service of others in communities, both local and global, includes understanding the responsibilities of controlling our impact on natural resources. We believe that educating our boys about our influence and practicing clear, measurable actions to limit harmful effects are aligned with the school's mission. Ultimately, we intend to leave our environment better than we found it, for the future of the School and for the future of all communities.

Did you know that the food at Saint David’s is locally grown? Did you know that our initiative to save and reduce paper saved 130,000 pieces in our first year alone? Did you know that the boys take part in a juice box recycling program? The Environmental Awareness and Action Committee has spearheaded some exciting, meaningful projects over the past few years that have helped Saint David's boys, faculty, and staff raise awareness and reduce our impact on our Earth. Saint David’s partnered with other schools and is 100% invested in Renewable Energy Credits to offset electricity usage. Two years ago, we also became involved in a state-wide energy curtailment program to minimize electricity usage during peak summer hours. Happily, our efforts have truly paid off.

In the months leading up to Earth Day, boys, faculty, and staff have pitched in to reduce our energy use school-wide. Classrooms recorded their daily energy-saving activities, and awards were given during our culminating Earth Day celebration. We also paired with the Nightingale-Bamford School for a friendly competition in energy conservation. Additionally, in the past, we’ve tallied our home water usage, and we’re continuing to collect bottle caps for repurposing. This year, our theme, Rigorous Environmental Pursuit, ties in with our school-wide theme.  Start saving your plastic grocery and dry cleaning bags because this year we’ll continue our ongoing efforts to reduce, reuse, recycle, and repurpose plastic.
